Message from Capt. Dan...
I'm Dan Shannon and I have a 24ft. comfortable pontoon boat that I fish from Cedar Key Florida in the Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge. Up close and shallow. That is, along the Keyes in the shallow waters over the 'flats'. Did you know islands are in deep water while Keyes are in shallow water? Its' pretty shallow along the coastal area of Cedar Key. I look for a depth of 4 to 5ft. over grass and sand to fish for speckled trout and cobia and a lot of different species of smaller bait fish and in the Spring and thru Summer into Fall we'll catch mackerel and sharks , maybe a tripletail or two. Fish school into the shallow waters from the deeper offshore waters to feed on all the smaller fish living on the flats in the healthy grass there. With oysters surrounding all the Keyes it makes for pretty good habitat. About 10 months of the year we can catch redfish around the oyster bars as they school there looking for crabs, shrimp, small fish that live close to the bars. 2 months during winter the water temp drops so low that catching fish gets pretty tough. It is January 15th today and I'm not out. I'm in, writing this text for the Clubs Deep Sea Fishing meeting and web site. I'm looking forward to March 15th when traditionally the water warms up and the waters explode with all the different species. I have all the gear you'll need and a fishing license too for everyone fishing on my boat. I can take 5 fishing folks out angling for all that's out there, remember, we'll be fishing on the edge of the ocean. the Gulf of Mexico. Every trip is an adventure. When we get back to the dock, 4 or 5 hours later, I will fillet all your catch and place the fillets in a Ziplock bag with fresh ice so you can have fresh fish for dinner that evening. Fresh is best. There is a large Bimini top that provides shade and with a slight breeze it makes for very comfy angling. Men, tell the ladies there is a private, walk in, marine head on the vessel for 'just in case'. Talk to Rich at the Club meetings or call me at 352-221-5463 and I'll answer all your questions straight from the captain. thanks, Dan
